Planning a 1960s-themed party

It’s your Mum’s 50th birthday this year, and you told your Dad to leave the party planning to you. Only, now that it’s time to start planning, you’re stumped! You considered a BBQ, but decided against it because let’s face it, the weather can’t be trusted. Your next idea was a formal dinner, but your Mum loves to dance the night away, so that was out too. Then, it came to you.

A themed party. A retro themed party. Based on the swinging sixties; the fabulous, fun decade that your Mum was born into. Perfect! Now, you find yourself researching party ideas and wondering where to start. Well, look no further.

Decorations

No 1960s theme would be complete without tie-dye. The decade was famous for it, and it can so easily be included in the party decorations. How about taking some old sheets, and tie-dying them to use as tablecloths? It can also be incorporated into an outfit – a modern dress, tie-dyed to fit the theme would certainly turn heads.

Having a few lava lamps dotted around the room would also add to the vibe, and you can’t have a 1960s party without a glitter ball or two!

Music

You couldn’t pick a better decade for music than the 1960s. Beatlemania was sweeping across the world, Elvis was still in the building, and Lulu was making us want to shout. If you’re hiring a DJ, they’ll probably have a ready-made package of songs available. However, it would be just as easy to put a soundtrack together yourself, as there are hundreds of 1960s compilation albums available.

Food and drink

A buffet full of classics such as cocktail sausages, pork pies, and pizza would work perfectly for a 1960s theme. These staple foods have been present at parties for decades, but you can always add some sweets from the time such as flying saucers or strawberry bon-bons for a real feel of the decade.

As for drinks, the 1960s was the decade of the cocktail. Serve a variety of cocktails including Tequila Sunrise, Pina Colada, and even a Harvey Wallbanger or two, and the party guests will feel like they’ve really stepped back in time.
